What Is Claude Cowork? AN AGENT THAT FINISHES THE WORK, NOT A CHATBOT THAT ANSWERS ABOUT IT. Cowork is Anthropic's way of pointing Claude's agent abilities at real knowledge work instead of code. You describe an outcome, step away, and come back to finished deliverables: a formatted document, an organised folder, synthesised research, an Excel model with working formulas, or a slide deck built from your files. The promise is simple: you decide what, Claude decides how. Under the hood it runs like a team, not a chat. Claude analyses the request, writes a plan, breaks it into subtasks, runs code and shell commands in isolated environments on Anthropic's servers, coordinates parallel workstreams, and delivers the result back to you. Long jobs no longer die at a conversation timeout or a context limit, and your session follows you: start on desktop, monitor on the web, pick it up on mobile. On the Claude Desktop app it also reaches into your world directly: reading and writing your local files without manual uploads, opening Chrome to click and fill forms, and (on macOS) driving other apps with Computer Use.
